press inquiries and general information
Eric Degenhardt was born in Cologne, Germany.
He studied Architecture at the Rheinisch Westfälisch
Technische Hochschule
in Aachen and has worked
on several architectonical projects before he switched
his focus towards furniture and industrial design -
after spending a time in London.
Taking his idea of space and architecture, it was a
logical step to move away from the big scale
and move towards the smaller scale. It is the furniture
and the products, together with the users, that finally
define the function of an architectonical space.

He tends towards formal lightness - letting the pieces
hover, with sleek shapes and clean details and a
minimum of different materials. Since setting up his
own studio in Cologne in 2000, he has developed furniture,
packaging and architectonical spaces for international
clients including:

Aerome(Germany), BASF Coatings(Germany), Boffi(Italy)
COR(Germany), Lamy(Germany), Object Collection(Canada)
Paola Lenti(Italy), Progetti(Italy)
Richard Lampert(Germany), Wilkhahn(Germany)

Many of his designs have received international design
awards - and have been exhibited worldwide.
He was guest professor at the Free University of
Bolzano (Italy), he still teaches as invited lecturer
or critic and holds workshops
across europe.

A new lounge chair especially designed for places where informal encounters happen - areas, such as libraries, lobbies and even livingzones.
A steel frame with a soft padded, seamless and structured cover seems to hover on a light and precise aluminium
cast base. By using shaped knitting technology a high degree of seated comfort is provided.

The range is completed by a footstool and a matching three-legged side table - head and armrest versions to follow.

The chair has been launched at the Orgatec.

Degenhardt's redesign of the Hirche chair was trickier.
»I was not sure about changing the details of somebody
else's design« he says. He solved the problem rather
cleverly - by changing the context of the object without
compromising the beauty of the original.
Herbert Hirche (who studied under Mies van der Rohe)
originally designed the chair for his own sitting room.
»He offered it to Knoll,« says Lampert, »but they didn't
want it, so it never went into production.«
Degenhardt turned the rather low-slung armchair from a
sitting-room object into a garden object - using a
waterproof fabric, for instance, and laquered steel
tubing to make it suitable for use outdoors.
He made tiny interventions in the design, which suddenly
made the chair contemporary instead of vintage.

With the cup range I tried to make an armchair and a sofa
- kind of light - resolving it into thin elements/pieces.
For me it is important that the furniture may be positioned in the centre of the room - not only against the walls. That means that the pieces cannot have a ›backside‹ - the sofa has
become a mixture between a sofa and bench and although thin - it's very comfortable.
A 2½-seater was launched at the cologne fair in january 2008. manufacturer: www.richard-lampert.de

We thought about finding a simple easy chair for inside and outdoor use. A basic and light powder coated structure. A sleek and instantly changeable padded cover -
in wool, technical advanced materials or a soft genuine leather. Take the chair and have a sip outside. manufacturer: www.richard-lampert.de
